My guess ... is that the train is operating south-west from Peterborough on the CPR track toward Byersville.
The CNR lines (perpendicular at the diamond) lead to Crawford Grove and Downer Corners.

With the drivers chocked, the cab stairway with its light, and the August 1936 date ...
this must be a publicity tour for the new class of engines (and new cars).
