Old Newfoundland Postcards x4 +1

I've collected a lot of Canadian 'railway-related' postcards and I think it would be good for someone else to get some enjoyment from them. I'm not using them as regularly in blog articles as I once thought I would.

I've often found image searches to be helpful and interesting, so perhaps some of these cards will be of benefit in a random way once they get 'out in the wild'.

I'll work to group these postcards by theme and add in a map which includes the geographical area of the theme. As insurance against a given assortment being a total loss for visitors to the site, I'm planning to end each grouping with a totally unrelated card.

The story of a postcard's travel can be interesting, so I'm including the reverse side. Unfortunately, the stamps are often removed because a previous owner chose to 'monetize' them. Frequently, interesting historical details are lost when the stamps are removed.

If the card is relatively recent, I may delete some personal details in the address, etc.

And the prices often appear in pencil on the cards ... so you know to pay LESS than I did if you find an identical specimen.

CNR 1958 Public Timetable, Eastern Canada, Part 1

Generally, this timetable covers the territory east of Montreal, to Halifax and St John's, and includes the Newfoundland Coastal Services.

In many cases, train equipment details are provided.

from: Canadian National Railways 1956 annual report.

Postcard, unused, undated, published by: The Book Room Ltd, Halifax.

The undated postcard above shows the Halifax passenger trainsheds, station, and the associated yards and buildings.
In addition, the connected passenger/immigration ocean terminals are shown to the right.

Moncton, circa 1966. Image filed by LC Gagnon. Publication unknown.

From an unknown publication, this nice view of Moncton was put on file by LC Gagnon. The view looks timetable west. The station leads appear at the right side of the yard. A number of passenger station buildings can be seen to the right of those tracks - just beyond the road underpass in the foreground.

CNR 1949 Newfoundland Public Timetable

About a month after confederation with Canada the new railway operator printed this public timetable.

Above is an Ayre Company (a St John's family business) postcard, manufactured in Germany.
A paper mill later put the 'Hum on the Humber' - as they said back in the early 1920s.

The postmark is probably from 1909 - so before the Great War.
In Britain, TPO stood for Travelling Post Office,
and Newfoundland often called itself 'Britain's oldest colony'.
The card was mailed to Belleville, Ontario.
Railway detail and the postmark are enlarged below.
